Synopsis
Le concept de handicap a été examiné sous diverses perspectives culturelles à travers le monde, y compris le Nigéria et s'est avéré être perçu différemment dans chaque culture. Dans la société nigériane, les personnes handicapées ont été mal comprises, ce qui a conduit à leur perception négative et à leur traitement. L'expérience a montré que les croyances d'un groupe d'individus sur les causes d'un handicap affectent dans une large mesure leurs attitudes envers les personnes handicapées. De même, la perception de la cause du handicap détermine le type de traitement suivi. Dans la culture igbo, par exemple, un handicap peut être attribué à la colère des dieux, auquel cas la personne est tuée ou jetée dans une forêt maléfique pour être dévorée par des animaux sauvages. L'ironie est que ce traitement est administré malgré le niveau d'intelligence que possède la personne handicapée. Cette attitude est inhumaine et, par conséquent, fait reculer le peuple Igbo au lieu d'avancer. C'est à cette fin que l'auteur s'inquiète de ce qui peut être fait pour corriger ces croyances erronées et provoquer un changement de position. Cela fera avancer la société et amener les Igbo à atteindre des sommets plus élevés.
