Synopsis

This study aimed at exploring developmental changes in duration of vowels of Oriya language, which is one of the South Asian languages, spoken in Eastern India. The language has unique features of vowels which makes it marked. Vowel duration is one of the aspects among few others, which can signal to speech production disorders or failures at various levels of production. The study delivered precise and comprehensive analysis on factors like gender, pre-vocalic voicing, vowel type, and developmental changes in the duration of vowels of the language, which can serve as baseline data for future studies. It also focused on a second aspect of phonological processing in children and adults speaking this language by comparing geminate vowel context and singleton vowels, and also their developmental trends.
