Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is endemic in some communities in the Kassena-Nankana District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. Biu is one of the LF endemic communities in the Kassena-Nankana District which has completed 8 rounds of annual mass chemotherapy programme using a combination of ivermectin and albendazole in 2009. This study evaluated the cumulative efficacy of 7 years of Community Directed Treatment (ComDT) programmes for annual mass chemotherapy for the control of lymphatic filariasis and treatment coverage as well as people’s knowledge and perceptions on transmission, prevention and eradication of elephantiasis and hydrocoele, common manifestations of chronic lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the Biu community of the Kassena-Nankana District after the eighth ComDT in 2009.

Kwaku Appiah-Kubi is a Lecturer in Parasitology at the Department of Applied Biology of the University for Development Studies, Navrongo, Ghana. His research interest is in virulent proteins of parasites, cell signal transductions and immunodiagnosis of parasitic diseases.
