Synopsis

This book explores the physical experiences of immigrant wheelchair users in African-led churches and the perceptions of the church leaders regarding physical access for wheelchair users. This book draws from perspectives of different academic scholars as well as international bodies representing people with disabilities in relation to physical access to public places. The book points out that, most African-led church are inaccessible to wheelchair users, and the most common physical access barrier to church service was found to be inadequate building entrances and facilities within the churches. The denial of wheelchair users’ right to attend church services and thereby become part of the wider church community was recognised as a main problem. Explanations from the wheelchair users’ represented their practical experiences, which emphasised that they think the leadership do not pay particular attention to the issues facing them. The church leaders on the other hand pointed out that there are challenges in providing service to their community, which include but are not limited to; style of church buildings, funding and planning permission.
