Synopsis

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) belongs to the family Solanaceae. It is the second largest vegetable crop processed in United State of America and in many other parts of the world. In the world, tomato is generally cultivated over an area of 63.83 millian hectares with a production of 748.78 millian tons and has 11.7 tones per hectare of productivity. In India it occupies about an area of 8.65 millian hectares with a production of 165.26 millian tones and a productivity of 17.39 tones per hectare. In Gujarat it is cultivated on an area of 0.38 hectares accounting for production of 9.78 millian tones with a productivity of 25.50 million tones per hectare (Anon., 2012).
