LEPTIN (from the Greek leptos, meaning thin) is a protein hormone with important effects in regulating body weight, metabolism and reproductive function. They influence when eating begins, how long or fast and organism eats, when eating stops, and how long the interval between eating will last. Leptin is one of these neurotransmitters. Leptin is a 146 amino acid-long protein that is encoded by the obesity (ob) gene.
