Speed-Flow characteristics are concerned with the laws of physics & mathematics to measure the ability of a roadway to accommodate traffic. To test the behavior of individual vehicle, these vehicles are classified into various group. Speed-Flow behavior varies with human behavior to large extent. As speed decreases, flow increases largely, but as speed increases, flow reduces & falls to minimum which can be said as free flow. About 40% of total road traffic is carried by the National Highways which is only 2% of the total road network. This clearly indicates the congestion of traffic and drop in Level of Service (LOS) on our road network. The precise determination of relationship between speed and flow is essential for arriving at the capacity of a road. Therefore, utilization of the available resources in an optimal way is necessary to provide an efficient road network and enable the economy to grow with minimum hindrance. The Principal objective of the present study is to evolve speed-flow relationships on National Highway-8 for different types of vehicles and thus estimate the capacity of existing NH-8.
