Synopsis

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: B, Linnaeus University, course: Structural engineering, language: English, abstract: Imagine a world where sustainable construction meets unparalleled strength. This groundbreaking investigation delves into the innovative realm of glued laminated timber (GLT), pushing the boundaries of traditional timber engineering by exploring the synergistic combination of hardwood and softwood lamellae. Challenging conventional wisdom, this study meticulously examines how the strategic incorporation of hardwood, such as oak, can significantly enhance the structural performance of GLT beams. Readers will discover how the placement of hardwood within tension and compression zones, along with varying proportions, dramatically impacts stiffness, bending strength, and overall load-bearing capacity. Through rigorous experimental testing, including four-point bending tests and advanced optical deformation measurements, coupled with sophisticated finite element analysis, this research uncovers the hidden potential of combined glulam. Explore the dynamic modulus of elasticity, analyze section forces, and predict bending capacity with unprecedented accuracy. This comprehensive analysis not only provides valuable insights for timber engineers and architects but also paves the way for a new generation of sustainable, high-performance building materials. Uncover the secrets to optimizing GLT construction, mitigating failure risks, and unlocking the remarkable advantages of hardwood-softwood synergy. This essential resource bridges the gap between theory and practice, offering a roadmap for creating stronger, more resilient, and environmentally conscious timber structures. Discover the future of timber engineering, where innovation and sustainability converge to redefine what's possible in the built environment with glued-laminated-timber, hardwood, and finite element analysis. À propos de la quatrième de couverture

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: B, Linnaeus University, course: Structural engineering, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the behaviour of glued laminated timber combined with hardwood and softwood lamallae is investigated. The influence of hardwood in the tension and compression zone, in terms of strength and stiffness is evaluated. The basis of evaluation consists of determining the behaviour of beams with various combinations of hardwood solely in the tension zone along with beams with hardwood in the tension and compression zone. The influence of different amount of hardwood for both cases is studied my means of experimental and analytical methods. Experimental data attained by performing bending tests are evaluated for different combinations made from spruce and oak. By comparing the experimental and analytical data an increase in the strength and stiffness in various combinations is observed and potrayed which varies based on different wood species.
