Synopsis

The "Queen" Underground - The Era of Naked Mole Rats at Dresden Zoo is a unique account based on over 30 years of hands-on experience keeping and breeding Heterocephalus glaber at Dresden Zoological Garden. Naked mole rats are among the most fascinating and least understood mammals on earth. Christiane Krönke, a long-serving keeper at Dresden Zoo, offers a rare and in-depth insight into the world of these extraordinary animals - from establishing a stable group and nutrition, through pregnancy and birth, to royal power struggles and the small daily secrets that only years of close observation can reveal. This book is not a scientific textbook - it is the personal record of a passion. Written for zoo keepers, zoologists, researchers and all those who want to understand what it truly means to live and work alongside these curious little naked creatures. With numerous photographs from everyday zoo life, practical husbandry recommendations and honest accounts of both successes and setbacks, this work is an invaluable resource for anyone keeping or planning to keep naked mole rats.
