The editions of the writings of Bishop Ambrosius of Milan (died 397), published from 1896 on by the "Commission for the Publication of a Corpus of Critically Corrected Texts of the Latin Church Fathers" founded in 1864, were not the first but (with one exception) are to date the only editions of this author created using text criticism and a careful study of the manuscripts, and, despite the appearance of the first volumes over 100 years ago, are still just as valid today: their text was adopted, mostly without any major corrections, into the complete Latin-Italian edition of the writings of Ambrosius (SAEMO) initiated in 1974.
