The tenth volume of the edition of Pope Innocent III's chancery registers, the eighth of the edition series to be published, contains 217 letters written in 1207 and 1208, most issued by the pope. These letters include a solicitation of Philip, (German) King of the Romans, as well as two French royal charters that are inserted into papal letters. Other matters being dealt with include theological, liturgical, legal and juridical questions; the church organisation of the Latin Empire of Constantinople and relations to the Greek church; political and ecclesiastical issues in France, Denmark, Sicily and the German Empire; the conflict with the King of England over the election to the See of Canterbury; marital matters and property questions; efforts to counter heresies; affairs in the Patrimonium Petri; privileges and the verification of rights and possessions of bishoprics, monasteries and hospitals; matters concerning the episcopate and litigation within the Church, including contested elections in bishoprics and abbeys or disciplinary problems; and a variety of decisions offering insights into major and minor problems of the church and the people around the year 1200. Many of the letters have become decretals. The volume offers a critical edition of the texts, the dating of hitherto undated letters, ample historical comments, the identification of textual parallels and quotations from the Bible, Canon and Roman law as well as from theological, liturgical and classical texts, and the insertions of letters into decretal collections. It has been prepared in a collaboration between the Institut fur Osterreichische Geschichtsforschung and the Austrian Historical Institute in Rome.
