Ver Sacrum', which was on display at the Vienna Secession in 2009 and called for a break from the traditional role of the museum visitor as a passive observer, a catalogue of the same name is now being published. The extraordinary and highly successful exhibition - curated by Pierre Bal-Blanc, Director of the Centre d'Art Contemporain (CAC) in Brétigny - featured works by artists active between 1960 and 1980 and was met with great acclaim from visitors, the specialist public and the media alike: It was ranked among the ten best exhibitions of the year by artforum and Frieze. The book is not a traditional exhibition catalogue, but should be understood as an in-depth research and analytical tool. Texts previously unpublished in this translation shed light on the issues raised in the exhibition from alternative perspectives. Furthermore, numerous previously unpublished reproductions of selected works are juxtaposed with contextualising exhibition views and reference images. The publication also draws on the magazine Ver Sacrum (published by Gustav Klimt for the Secession): the format and concept of a unified visual identity are taken up and reinterpreted by the graphic designers VIER5. With works by Bernard Bazile, Robert Breer, Edouardo Costa, Anna Halprin, Lawrence Halprin, David Lamelas, David Medalla, Hans-Walter Müller, Walter Pfeiffer, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, Franz Erhard Walther, Lois & Franziska Weinberger, Cornelius Cardew, Michel Journiac, Yves Klein, Pierre Klossowski, John Latham, Piero Manzoni and others, and texts by András Pálffy, Pierre Bal-Blanc, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, Gianni Pettena, Terre Thaemlitz, Philippe le Moal, Dean Inkster and others.
