Synopsis
These volumes examine the molecular mechanisms underlying the inducible expression of genes in response to hormonal signals and environmental stimuli, including ultraviolet light, heat, heavy metals, viruses and xenobiotics. A wide range of distinct gene-inductory mechanisms are discussed, with equal emphasis put on aspects of physiology, signal transduction from the exterior to the cell nucleus, and nuclear events ultimately leading to increased gene transcription. Volume 1 discusses environmental stresses and nutrients; Volume 2 covers hormonal signs. Together, the two volumes provide a review of the present state of knowledge on inducible gene expression. They should be of use to researchers as well as students and teachers in the fields of genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology.
