Synopsis
Spätestens seit dem Bau von Frank Lloyd Wrights Imperial Hotel in Tokio 1923 werden die architektonischen Entwicklungen in Japan weltweit aufmerksam beobachtet. Der Modernisierungsschub der fünfziger Jahre und der seit 1960 andauernde Wirtschaftsboom haben die Grundlagen für eine einmalige Situation gelegt: Nirgendwo sonst ging die Begeisterung für innovative Technologien und Entwürfe so beständig einher mit ihrer tatsächlichen Anwendung und Realisierung.
Der Band umfaßt die wichtigsten Bauten des 20. Jahrhunderts in Japan. Dazu gehören die Werke der Meister Kenzo Tange, Arata Isozaki und Tadao Ando, die Projekte jüngerer Architekten wie Itsuko Hasegawa, Hiroshi Naito und Kazuo Shinohara ebenso wie die Bauten ausländischer Architekten wie Aldo Rossi, Cesar Pelli, Rem Koolhaas und Norman Foster.
Insgesamt werden rund 400 Bauten mit eigenen Einträgen vorgestellt. Unverzichtbarer Reisebegleiter ebenso wie umfassendes Nachschlagewerk mit ausführlichem Register und Bibliographie.
