Synopsis

Defying any artistic categorization, the work of the German architects Hansen + Petersen began in the peripheral zones of industrial cities, and show a clear predilection for the methods of industrial production and assembly and a technical-constructive aesthetic, avoiding romanticized ecological architecture or the cost-intensive high-tech styling. This volume discusses their work during the years 1988 and 1997. With their first administrative building, Allopro, in Gelsenkirchen, they set out to prove the viability of a cost-efficient and ecologically-responsible architecture. Among their realized designs are headquarters for high-tech medicine, enterprises such as the glazed info-pavilion of the Emscher-Co-operative in connection with the IBA Emscher Park; supermarkets of a ecologically and constructively-challenging design; solar houses; the apartment and business building at Musikteater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen; and the Ruhr-Lippe administrative building in Dortmund.
