Ihre Architektur bietet uns ein Erlebnis, das nicht entlang zeitgeistiger Trends verläuft: hier geht es um einen individuellen Beitrag zur aktuellen Architekturdiskussion. Und es geht um "Codes" – um die Verarbeitung und Anwendung historischer, kontextueller, architekturtheoretischer, künstlerischer Elemente und ihre Transformation in zeitgenössische, nutzerorientierte Architektur.

For twenty-five years, Hubert Hermann and François Valentiny have maintained their offices in Vienna and Luxemburg. They are linked by a common attitude, molded over the years in a constant verbal and design-based exchange of ideas. They are separated by their locations: here the metropolis of Vienna, there the small and more rural Luxemburg. Hence their disparate tasks – from toolsheds to prestigious structures, from single-family homes to urban housing developments.

This monograph is organized thematically. Architecturally, their works are carried out on a comparable level, but they differ in terms of their subjective expression. Their architecture offers us an experience that doesn’t hew to the parameters of the zeitgeist. Instead, it makes a highly individual contribution to the current architectural discussion. It also works with "codes," processing and utilizing historical, contextual, theoretical, and artistic elements and transforming them into contemporary, user-oriented architecture.

Honorary professor Liesbeth Waechter-Böhm was born in Vienna in 1946. She is a publicist in the fields of art and architecture. From 1994 to 1999, she was editor in chief of Architektur aktuell. She is the author of articles in numerous professional journals as well several books, including the monographs Hermann & Valentiny and Partners: Now/Jetzt and Baumschlager | Eberle: Über Wohnbau (Baumschlager | Eberle: On Domestic Architecture).

Liesbeth Waechter-Böhm, Prof. h.c., geb. 1946 in Wien. Kunst- und Architekturpublizistin. 1994–99 Chefredakteurin von Architektur aktuell, Beiträge in zahlreichen Fachzeitschriften, Autorin mehrerer Bücher, darunter die Monografien Hermann & Valentiny and Partners, Now/Jetzt und Baumschlager | Eberle: Über Wohnbau.
