Synopsis

Nedko Solakov’s wide-ranging and exuberant work, which in formal terms is hard to keep in bounds, is a singular assault on the desire for perfection, finality, and clarity. Starting from his studies of mural painting at the art academy in Sofia, the Bulgarian artist (*1957) has developed an oeuvre over the past twenty-five years that is as humorous as it is playful, as stinging as it is melancholy, and which casts doubt on the authenticity of each and every system of representation. At the latest since his contributions to the 2007 Venice Biennale and documenta 12, Solakov has occupied one of the central positions within current European art. This publication accompanies a large survey of his oeuvre that includes examples of his work from the late eighties to 2007, combined with pieces that have been created specifically for the presentation.

Nedko Solakovs weit gespanntes, ausuferndes und formal kaum zu bändigendes Werk ist inhaltlich ein einziger großer Angriff auf das Verlangen nach Perfektion, Endgültigkeit und Eindeutigkeit. Ausgehend von einem Studium der Wandmalerei an der Kunstakademie in Sofia hat der 1957 geborene Bulgare in den letzten 25 Jahren ein ebenso humorvolles, wie verspieltes, ebenso bissiges wie melancholisches euvre entwickelt, das die Gültigkeit jedweden Repräsentationssystems grundsätzlich in Frage stellt. Spätestens seit seinen Beteiligungen an der Biennale Venedig 2007 und der Documenta 12 gehört Solakov zu den zentralen Positionen innerhalb der aktuellen europäischen Kunst und zu den Lieblingen des Kunstpublikums. Die Publikation begleitet eine groß angelegte Ausstellung, die künstlerische Beispiele seit Ende der 1980er-Jahre bis 2007 umfasst und mit neu für die Schau entstandenen Stücken kombiniert. Nedko Solakov, born in 1957 at Chevren Briag, Bulgaria. Studies of art at the Sofia Art Academy, graduation as a mural painter. In 1985/86 studies at the Nationaal Hoger Institut voor Shoone Kunsten in Antwerp. Participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Scholarships in Zurich, Vienna and at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. In 2001, participation at the Venice Biennale. Lives and works in Sofia.
