Synopsis

Peter Downsbrough (*1940 in New Jersey) studied art and architecture and, like Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, and Lawrence Weiner, is one of the first book artists to work conceptually. He has incorporated text and line drawings into his books since the early seventies, later integrating maps and photos of urban spaces. His consistent and sharply delineated oeuvre is devoted to examining the meaning of "space." As early as 1993, the publisher, book collector, and curator Guy Schraenen wrote the following about the artist's publications: "One might call them the absolute zero of the book, since it presents itself here in its simplest form." The publication provides an overview of all the books that have been published to date-eighty-five in the meantime-which Downsbrough created in collaboration with publishers or published himself, and comments on this impressive aspect of his artistic career.
