Synopsis
Dance and the visual arts have long since entered a relationship, yet an authoritative portrayal of the points at which they intersect has yet to be compiled. This comprehensive publication now assembles works by about forty different artists in an attempt to find a place in art history for the multilayered affinities between contemporary dance and the modern visual arts of the past forty years. The line is used to trace this history.\nWhile modern dance veers from the strict codes of traditional ballet en pointe, adopting everyday gestures and natural, childlike play into its standard repertoire, contemporary drawing also abandons the confines of technical perfection to leap out of the (picture) frame. In both places, the line, as an independent means of expression, emancipates itself from consummate form in order to appear in space as an open, socially integrative element.
