Synopsis
Imi Knoebel schuf 2009 in der oberen Halle der von Mies van der Rohe gebauten Neuen Nationalgalerie ein beeindruckendes Gesamtkunstwerk, das in seiner formalen Radikalität nicht sich selbst genügte, sondern sich in seiner Maßhaltigkeit als eine Skulptur für die Zukunft erwiesen hat. Die wirkliche Dimension des Raums wurde erst durch seine Abgeschlossenheit sichtbar, die Energie war nach innen gerichtet, und alles, was sich darin befand, wurde nicht nur unweigerlich bedeutsam, sondern Teil einer Skulptur, eines Gesamtkunstwerks. Nachts strahlte der gesamte Raum der oberen Halle der Neuen Nationalgalerie von innen heraus. Durch die geweißten Glaswände wurde er zu einer geheimnisvollen riesigen Laterne im Stadtraum, deren Licht das unbestimmbare Dunkel der Zukunft zu sein schien und ihr dennoch eine erhellende Kontur verlieh.
