PIET MONDRIAN (1872–1944) war einer der Pioniere der abstrakten Kunst. Weltruhm erlangte der aus einer streng calvinistischen Familie stammende Künstler durch seine Kompositionen aus schwarzen Linien und rechteckigen Feldern in den Grundfarben, sein Frühwerk war aber durch die niederländische Landschaftsmalerei des 19. Jahrhundert geprägt.
