Neu -1532 bis 1536/37 reiste der holländische Künstler Maarten van Heemskerck nach Rom, flanierte durch die Stadt, besuchte Kunstsammlungen und Antikengärten, pilgerte zu den heiligen Stätten, und füllte dabei sein Skizzenbuch mit Zeichnungen. Die meisten der dort entstandenen und heute in Berlin aufbewahrten Blätter stammen aus einem Zeichnungsbuch, dessen originale Bindung verloren ist. Nun haben neueste kunsttechnologische Untersuchungen am Berliner Kupferstichkabinett die ursprüngliche Reihenfolge der Buchseiten weitgehend rekonstruiert. Sie bildet die Grundlage des vorliegenden Faksimiles. In seinen faszinierenden Studien hielt Van Heemskerck antike Skulpturen und Ruinen, die bewunderte Kunst von Michelangelo und Raffael, und römische Stadtlandschaften fest. Dabei bewies er ein besonderes Gespür für Kompositionen und Perspektiven sowie eine außerordentliche zeichnerische Sensibilität. Im Zeichnungsbuch fand der Künstler sein persönliches Experimentierfeld und zugleich entstand ein kostbarer Motivfundus, aus dem er zeitlebens schöpfen sollte. (Text engl.) 184 pp. Englisch.
