Synopsis

Michael Triegel, born in Erfurt in 1968 and a graduate of the College of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig is among the most important representatives of the New Leipzig School. He paints and sketches landscapes, still lifes and portraits, based primarily on mythological and religious subjects. Triegel s artistic metamorphosis refers to his process of taking well-known images in art history, mainly from Italian Renaissance painters such as Giovanni Bellini, Raphael, Leonardo, Bronzino and Pontormo, which he then reinvents to introduce modern elements or interpretations of his own. In 2010 the artist s reputation as a master of portraiture prompted the diocese of Regensburg to commission an official portrait of Pope Benedict XVI. Triegel made sketches for a portrait during a Papal general audience in Rome, and the portrait was unveiled to the public during the exhibition of his works in the Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig. Pope Benedict is reported to have told Triegel, You are my Raphael! Michael Triegel s works are a combination of old master virtuosity andmodern techniques. His pictures draw on both Christian symbolism and classical mythology with resonances in Italian art ranging from the Early Renaissance to Mannerism. At the same time, they are highly individual and challenging observations on life and living today. This monograph features 120 works dating from 2003 to 2010, each detailed in a series of scholarly essays and commentaries. The works comprise principally paintings but also include preparatory sketches, drawings, watercolours and etchings, as well as offering a representative survey of the artist s extensive oeuvre.
