Egon Schiele is above all famous for his strongly expressive nudes and erotic portrayals of women. Less well known is that half of his extensive works are of houses, townscapes and landscapes. The author goes in search of evidence of Schiele's motifs, and contrasts and compares historical photographs with the paintings. Schiele lived in the region captured in his paintings ; he loved this unspoiled landscape, and painted it again and again. The numerous pictures come to life and the observer is taken through the villages with the painter, sees houses and gardens as well as meadows and fields in different seasons. Egon Schiele's oeuvre is shown from an entirely new angle.

During his medical and art-story studies in the 1950s, professor Rudolf Leopold began to collect works by the little-known artist Egon Schiele. With numerous national and international exhibitions he brought Austrian painter to the forefront of European painting. In 1972 Rudolf Leopold published his comprehensive Schiele monograph and the first location study of the artist's motifs. In 1994, he was co-founder, together with the Austrian Republic and the Austrian National Bank, of the Leopold Foundation. In 2001 the Leopold Museum was opened in Vienna and Rudolf Leopold was appointed lifelong director.

Hardcover. A beautiful red fabric bound hardcover book with the title in silver lettering down the spine. There is a color-illustrated dust jacket, with the title in white down a predominantly dark spine. The free and pasted end pages are black. Pages: (9), 10-206, (2). Profusely illustrated with both color and black-and-white images. "This visually stunning collection of landscape paintings and drawings by Egon Schiele brings to light a little-known aspect of this famous painter's oeuvre, proving that his mastery extends beyond his radical renditions of the human figure and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life's work. While Schiele is largely revered for his provocative paintings of women, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. Schiele's landscapes represent an important facet of his career and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting." VG: Exlibrary book. Sticker at the base of the spine. Stamp on front free end page. Stamp, sticker, due date card on back pasted end page. N° de réf. du vendeur 202898
