Superbly reproduced images of selected sculptures and late drawings by Rodin document his obsession with sexuality, revealing the countless ways he depicted the subject: as a threat and challenge, but also as the source of all creative inspiration and passion. Augmenting these illustrations are essays by leading scholars exploring the ramifications of eros in Rodin's work and his influence on his contemporaries as well as on future artists. In word and image, this volume deepens our understanding of nineteenth century's premier sculptor.

Large Softcover. Etat : Near Fine to Fine. Auguste Rodin, the pre-eminent sculptor of the 19th century, is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture as the art has developed in the 20th and 21st centuries. Known for many major works such as "The Burghers of Calais," "The Thinker," and "The Gates of Hell," Rodin also courted controversy in his exploration of sexuality and eroticism. This book, originally published in hardcover in 1992 in conjunction with an exhibition of Rodin's work, provides an in-depth examination of Rodin's discourse on the erotic in his drawings and sculpture over his career. First Printing, First Edition Thus. About 7 3/4 x 9 5/8 inches, 186 pages in heavy card wrappers showing a detail of "The Kiss" on the front cover and "Danaid" on the back against a black background and white lettering.
