Carlo Scarpa was a virtuoso of light, a master of detail, a connoisseur of materials. In his lifetime he was often dismissed as "merely" an artist who also wanted to build. Today, however, it is clear that his own brand of Modernism made him one of the 20th- century architectural greats.
