Et c'est presque un siècle de créations artistiques, toujours recommencées, toujours renouvelées. Né à Vitebsk, en Biélorussie, influencé par l'art byzantin, les icônes russes et son folklore, Chagall a laissé une oeuvre délicieusement imprégnée de poésie, d'humour et d'enchantement, tout un univers magique, peuplé de mariés, de bouquets de fleurs, d'animaux fantastiques, d'horloges ailées, de personnages de cirque. Évoquant son village natal, le pays de son enfance, il crée des compositions fantasmagoriques, affranchies des règles de perspective, du respect d'échelle. L'auteur, Jacob Baal-Teshuva, né en 1929, spécialiste renommé de Chagall, écrivain, critique d'art et commissaire d'expositions, fut un ami de Chagall, depuis leur première rencontre en 1951 jusqu'à la mort du peintre. Diplômé de l'université hébraïque de Jérusalem et de l'université de New York, Jacob Baal-Teshuva est l'auteur de publications consacrées à Chagall, mais aussi à Andy Warhol, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Il vit aujourd'hui à New York et Paris.
