Synopsis
20.000 soviet soldiers were buried on the cemetery of the former Bergen-Belsen prisoner-of-war-camp. Located near the Bergen-Belsen Memorial is one of the largest war cemeteries in the Federal Republic of Germany. Between 1941 and 1945, nearly 20,000 Soviet soldiers, Italian military internees and Polish prisoners-of-war who had died in the Bergen-Belsen POW camp were buried there. The authors Silke Petry and Rolf Keller use texts and photos to recount the history of the Bergen-Belsen POW camp and reconstruct the configuration and design of the cemetery by the Wehrmacht during the war. They document the placement of monuments, efforts to redesign the cemetery and political debates in the decades that followed and contemplate how memory culture has changed since the end of the war. With an essay by Natalja Jeske about the artist Mykola Muchin.

À propos des auteurs
Rolf Keller, geb. 1956, war von 1985 bis 2004 Referent bei der Niedersächsischen Landeszentrale für politische Bildung, zwischen 1999 und 2004 war er Vertreter des Landes Niedersachsen im deutschrussischen Forschungsprojekt »Sowjetische Kriegsgefangene«. Von 2000 bis 2007 arbeitete er als Leiter des Recherche- und Ausstellungsprojektes »Kriegsgefangenenlager« im Rahmen der Neukonzeption der Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen und ist seit 2004 als Abteilungsleiter in der Stiftung niedersächsische Gedenkstätten in Celle tätig.
Silke Petry, geb. 1963, war von 2004–2009 Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin der Stiftung niedersächsische Gedenkstätten im Projekt »Neugestaltung der Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen«. Seit 2012 ist sie Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Dokumentationsstelle Widerstand und Verfolgung 1933–1945 auf dem Gebiet des Landes Niedersachsen der Stiftung niedersächsische Gedenkstätten, Celle. Veröffentlichungen u. a.: Sowjetische Kriegsgefangene im Arbeitseinsatz (Mithg., 2013).
