Synopsis
Reconnu comme premier mouvement artistique né aux États-Unis à avoir exercé une influence mondiale, l’expressionnisme abstrait désigne l’usage non-représentationnel de la peinture à des fins d’expression personnelle. Il est apparu aux États-Unis dans les années 1940, porté par de grandes figures comme Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko ou Willem de Kooning.
L’expressionnisme abstrait recouvre de nombreux styles différents, parmi lesquels se détachent deux sous-catégories principales: l’action painting, dans laquelle se sont illustrés de Kooning et Pollock, et les «champs colorés», rendus célèbres par Mark Rothko. Les expressionnistes abstraits ont cherché à traduire les émotions et idées en travaillant sur les traces, les formes, les textures, les nuances et la qualité particulière des coups de pinceau. Ce mouvement privilégiait les toiles grand format et laissait la place au hasard et aux accidents.
Avec des œuvres de 20 artistes majeurs de l’expressionnisme abstrait, ce livre présente le mouvement qui a fait basculer le centre de gravité de l’art de Paris à New York et qui demeure pour beaucoup la grande époque de l’art américain.

À propos de l'auteur
Barbara Hess (nacida en 1964), historiadora de arte, crítica y traductora, reside en Colonia. Desde 1994 ha escrito numerosos textos sobre el arte contemporáneo en publicaciones como Camera Austria, Flash Art, Kunst-Bulletin y Texte zur Kunst. Junto con Ulrike Groos y Ursula Wevers, estuvo al frente de la exposición itinerante «Ready to Shoot. Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum/videogalerie schum» (2003/2004, acogida entre otros lugares en la Kunsthalle de Düsseldorf y en el Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de París).
