Françoise Tétart-Vittu estudió historia del arte en La Sorbona y se especializó en la historia del vestir de los siglos xviii y xix. Durante muchos años fue directora del departamento de artes gráficas y comisaria en el Musée de la Mode et du Costume de la Ville de Paris, conocido como Musée Galliera. Es autora de numerosos libros sobre la historia del vestir.
