Al finalizar los estudios de Historia del Arte y Arqueología en la Universidad de Viena, Karl Schütz empezó a trabajar en la pinacoteca del Museo de Historia de Viena, que dirigió entre 1990 y 2011 y donde es conservador desde 1972. Es experto en pintura holandesa y flamenca, pintura alemana de principios del siglo XVI, retratos cortesanos y en la historia de la colección de la pinacoteca.
