Synopsis
En novembre 2020, Depeche Mode entrait au Rock & Roll Hall of Fame et Dave Gahan recevait cet hommage avec ces mots: «Je voudrais remercier Anton Corbijn qui, grâce à Dieu, est monté à bord au bon moment pour nous donner l’air vraiment cool.» À l’automne 2020, TASCHEN avait publié Depeche Mode by Anton Corbijn (81–18) en édition limitée signée par Depeche Mode et Anton Corbijn, une des éditions collector qui s’est vendue le plus vite de toute l’histoire de notre maison. Cette nouvelle édition de poche, économique, témoigne de la vision unique de Corbijn et de cette image «cool» pour laquelle Gahan a exprimé sa touchante reconnaissance dans son discours. C’est une histoire illustrée du parcours Corbijn, qui, devenu le directeur artistique de facto du groupe en 1986, a participé à façonner la réputation de Depeche Mode, groupe culte dans le monde entier.
Cette édition présente plus de 150 photos issues des foisonnantes archives de Corbijn, parmi lesquelles des portraits officiels ou plus intimes saisis à Madrid, à Hambourg, dans le désert californien, à Prague ou à Marrakech; une multitude de clichés spontanés, pris sur le vif, et de captivantes photos du groupe prises sur scène lors de toutes ses tournées de 1988 à 2023.
Conçu en collaboration étroite avec le groupe, qui raconte aussi son travail avec Corbjin, Depeche Mode. Anton Corbijn raconte comment l’esthétique originale d’un homme, qui engloba toute leur iconographie, les photos, la plupart des clips, le graphisme des couvertures d’album, ainsi que les décors et la scénographie des tournées, a aidé à bâtir la popularité inaltérable du groupe. Dans l’introduction du livre, Corbijn décrit son rôle auprès de DM ainsi: «Beaucoup de décisions me revenaient et je voulais prendre les meilleures pour eux. Je voulais penser pour eux. Être grandiose pour eux.» Ce livre est un hommage à la profondeur et à l’envergure de cette grandeur, qui célèbre une des collaborations les plus riches et durables de l’histoire du rock.

Reuel Golden fue editor del British Journal of Photography y es el editor de fotografía de TASCHEN. Anton Corbijn (n. 1955), director de cine, operador de cámara y fotógrafo holandés, probablemente deba su fama, sobre todo, a su trabajo fundamental con bandas de rock.
