Synopsis

Liberal democracy is under pressure worldwide. It is challenged by anti-liberal movements and parties as well as by authoritarian regimes. Liberalism as a cross-party movement and a broad way of thinking has fallen into the defensive and is often associated with market radicalism, social coldness, and ecological ignorance. The contributors show that liberalism as a school of thought is not dead. Ralf Fücks is founder and managing director of the Center for Liberal Modernity in Berlin, a thinktank and platform for the discourse on renewing liberal democracy. Formerly he has been chairman of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung for 21 years. Fücks publishes frequently on questions of sustainable development, political strategy, and international relations in national as well as international media. Rainald Manthe, born in 1987, is a sociologist, author and works as head of the program »Liberal Democracy« at the think tank Center for Liberal Modernity. For his PhD, he did research on the transnational meetings of social movements. He writes regularly on questions of democracy development.
