Close to 10 million people in India suffer from Osteoarthritis. India is on the verge of an ?arthritis epidemic? India is one of the twelve strategic focus areas for orthopedic device manufacturers.The implants manufactured abroad and exported to India,after import duty and other taxes,they are unaffordable to Indian patient. This was thus sighted as need to develop implant in India considering indian patient's anatomy.SMP is Sancheti modular Prosthesis for total hip replacement surgery. It has been developed at Sancheti Institute Of Orthopedic research as an indigenous uncemented hip stem by ,Dr.K.H.Sancheti. This product is developed in view of reducing THR surgery cost by developing, manufacturing the hip joint at SIOR. Thereby it is expected to facilitate more number of hip replacement surgeries and give better quality of life for more number of patients. Thus it is targeted to cater for increasing need of THR surgeries in India every year.

Prof. Sathe Satish R. is the professor of Civil Engineering he is associated with collaborative research with COEP and SIOR and has supervised project `Indigenous Design of Orthopedic Implant development`.Prof. Mrs.Mrudula S.Kulkarni is a professor of structural engineering,her expertise is FEM in structural design& Bio mechanics.
