Academic Socialisation in Humanities/Social Sciences and Engineering is a qualitative case study of how PhD students are socialised into their respective discourse communities in UK universities. The book builds upon Wenger?s (1998) theory of communities of practice to look into this process, and highlights the role of relations and interactions among students and supervisors, as well as cooperation, competition and funding in this regard. A revised model of communities of practice is developed focusing on internal and external validities of the model.
