The collection of essays is written from the vantage point of the global South. The author considers key issues in post-apartheid South Africa, with particular reference to the experiences of South African Indians, as expressed in their recent writings. The expansion of our sense of history by a spate of fictional and biographical writings has prompted reflections on memory-making, identities, community, and nation-building at the present juncture. The influence of Gandhi as well as profiles of other writers is included. The perennial and universal issue of the connection between art and politics is an important sub-text of this collection.
