The globalizations of markets, the revolution in information and communication technologies, the increasing importance of financial markets, and the war for talent are only a few of the change drivers in the current business scenario. In this ever changing World, today’s managers are confronted with a number of daunting challenges in their quest for creating value by introducing new concepts. The Concept of “Competency Mapping” was one of the outcomes along with other Initiatives during the Business Process Re-engineering Study at HPCL. The HPCL is in a dilemma whether to implement their recommendations or not. The researcher as the Director (HR) has a passion for human resource profession and this made him to introduce the concept with the concurrence of the management. After a good deal of deliberations, discussions and counseling with management and colleagues, he has succeeded in convincing the management to introduce Competency Mapping. There were some hiccups initially but now we can say confidently that “we could make it work”. The book presents concept and different facets of Competency Mapping at HPCL.
