Synopsis

This book explores social protection opportunities for older people and how these can be harnessed to provide optimum protection for older people. It examines formal and informal social protection arrangements and the strength of these options for improving the well being of older people. The book argues that the traditional family support, especially in Africa, remains the best platform for protecting older people albeit, modernisation and other social change factors have weakened its effectiveness. Nonetheless, if state and non-state actors collaborate to strengthen the traditional family system and other community level structures such as religious groups and traditional leadership, better opportunities for protecting older people will be realised.
