Rilegato. Etat : quasi ottimo. The cover picture by Holger Mathies a brightly coloured armchair sitting complacently in a brown field-symbolizes one essence of poster art: the injection of light and colour into an often dull daily round. Of course posters are primarily intended to sell products or to draw attention to exhibitions or performances, but behind this primary function a second raison d'être is concealed; the artistic dimension gives the poster a second life beyond its immediate purpose. And the artistic value of the poster is nowadays recognized. "How else, asks Jacques Richez in his preface, "should we explain the multiplication of poster museums, the proliferation of exhibitions, whether periodic or not, and the fascination shown by collectors?" The contemporary poster is making wider use of collages, of integrated drawings and photographs. It displays subtlety, surrealism and waggishness as well as spontaneity and occasional wild gestures. Very many posters are triggered by social problems, with peace as a central theme. This book presents the most outstanding poster achievements from 33 countries on 204 pages (110 of them in colour). Once more, Polish poster art is very well represented.
