Roland Jaeger lives and works as a scholar of history of art, architecture, and photography in Hamburg und Berlin. He has published widely on 20th-century art and photography, including a monograph on Fritz Block as an architect (1996).

Small Folio. 320pp. Original bright red half cloth over photo-illustrated boards with white, black and red lettering on cover, black and white on spine. Photo-illustrated endpapers. Six frontispieces. Title page with modern design and typography, printed in red, white and black. Contains 499 mostly b/w photographs, including several photojournalistic works in sepia tone and some ninety color photographs at rear. Fritz Block (1889-1955) was one of the dedicated proponents of the New Architecture. Since 1929 Block applied the modern impulse to photography. He made a name of himself with technical photographs and depicting nature and human beings in the style of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). He also worked as a photojournalist producing travelogs from Paris, Marseilles and Northern Africa and in 1931 from the USA. Being of Jewish origin the rise of the Nazis in 1933 his career in Germany came to an abrupt halt. He was banned from working as an architect and his photographs were prohibited from publishing his photographs. He continued his work as a photographer while traveling until he emigrated to the USA in 1938. He settled in Los Angeles and made photography his main occupation. Photo-Eye is the first book about his work as photographer. His work includes photographs considered the "New Photography" of the 1920s in Germany all the way to his color photographs of the 1940s in the USA. Notable are his color slide series produced for advanced art classes, among them many photographs of the modern architecture in California. The book was published in conjunction with the exhibition "Foto-Auge Fritz Block. Der Architekt als Fotograf at the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg. Hardback. Roland Jaeger, Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag. Fritz Block (1889-1955) was one of the most dedicated proponents of Germany's postwar New Building movement. Starting in 1929, he also used the medium of photography to express the impulse of modernism along the ideals of New Objectivity and New Vision, traveling as a photojournalist to Paris, Marseille, and North Africa, as well as in 1931 to the United States, on a trip that took him to New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles. In spite of his prodigious accomplishments, because of his Jewish heritage, Block was banned by the Nazis from working as an architect in Germany in 1933, as well as from publishing his photographs. After this, he turned entirely to photography on extensive trips abroad. The first book to focus on Block's work as a photographer, Photo-Eye Fritz Block features a vast range of photographs taken throughout his entire career. Among his major journeys were a Zeppelin flight to Rio de Janeiro in 1933 and a world cruise in 1938. Block eventually emigrated to Los Angeles in late 1938, where he focused on color slides for educational purposes that characterized his work from 1940 to 1955. It was during this period that he produced an innovative series of slides depicting California's architectural modernism, which were widely distributed throughout the United States. Vividly illustrated with 475 photographs, including many in full color and published here for the first time, Photo-Eye Fritz Block demonstrates Block's significance in modern photography.
