Synopsis
Le plasticien Mathieu Mercier a travaillé pendant cinq ans à une réédition de la Boîte-en-valise de l´inventeur du ready-made. Déjà, avec la dotation financière du prix Marcel Duchamp en 2003, l´artiste avait acquis une oeuvre du maître. Cette fois, il s'est associé avec la famille Duchamp et l´éditeur allemand Walther König pour proposer un nouveau tirage de l´une des oeuvres emblématiques du 20e siècle.

With his Boîte-en-valise, or Museum in a Box, Duchamp embarked on one of his more ambitious projects: a portable museum of miniature replicas and facsimiles created with the help of elaborate reproduction techniques as pochoir (a type of hand stencilling) and comprising his most important works. Conceived in the mid-1930s and consisting of up to sixty-nine items, it was first released in 1941 and continued to be assembled in various editions until after his death, with the final seven different series totalling about 300 items. This publication is a facsimile of the series D, 1961 edition. Created with the full approval of the Duchamp Estate, it contains a reproduction of The Large Glass on Plexiglas, colour reproductions of his pictures, reproductions of his drawings and a selection of his humorous texts, a glass vial of Parisian air, a urinal, a small sugar dispenser, 'canned chance' and other miscellanea, all housed in a green cardboard box.

The design and construction will be approved by the estate of Marcel Duchamp once its quality has been examined, with the desire of making 'The Museum in the Box' accessible to everyone. The facsimile of the "portable oeuvre catalogue" complies with the artist's working methods. Duchamp carried out the preparation of the appropriate templates himself, handing over the production of the 80 miniatures to workshops or specialists. At once a work in and of itself, and a reproduction in the Duchampian spirit, this miniature museum contains 69 reproductions of Duchamp's most celebrated creations, including the famous "Fountain," "Nude Descending a Staircase" and the "Large Glass." Mercier has reproduced the bulk of the contents of Duchamp's original box in paper form, designing everything to scale.
