Synopsis
Sans autre forme de procès, Michael Kimmelman, le critique d'art du New York Times, avait qualifié Robert Smithson de " James Dean de l'art " en 1973 lorsque l'artiste, né en 1938 à Rutherford (New Jersey), était mort suite à un accident d'avion à 35 ans alors qu'il travaillait à une nouvelle oeuvre. Hormis ce parallélisme, cela s'explique surtout par l'effet magistral de la sculpture de Land Art de Robert Smithson, " Spiral Jetty ", dans le Grand Lac salé de l'Utah que Kimmelman avait qualifiée d'icône de l'Americana. Dans son oeuvre artistique et théorique, Robert Smithson s'est essentiellement consacré aux fondamentaux, de l'art postminimaliste au Land Art, en passant par l'auto-perception artistique. C'est ainsi que " Spiral Jetty " s'est hissé au niveau de la légende, grâce au film éponyme oscillant entre fiction et documentaire. Une deuxième oeuvre de Land Art a vu le jour en 1971 en Europe à l'occasion de l'exposition " Sonsbeek 71 " près de la ville hollandaise d'Emmen. Smithson avait également formulé ses idées sous .snoeck la forme de notes et d'esquisses pour un film pour lequel il avait déjà effectué les premières prises. Aujourd'hui, quarante ans plus tard, l'artiste et veuve de Smithson Nancy Holt a terminé ce film en collaboration avec SKOR (Amsterdam). Le livre documente l'exposition dans laquelle trois films, 50 dessins et photographies sont présentés, et traite en particulier des rapports de la sculpture de Land Art et des films chez Robert Smithson.

And in his artistic and theoretical work, Robert Smithson was concerned with nothing less than fundamentals of this sort Postminimalism, Land Art and artistic self-perception. In this way, Spiral Jetty has become legend through the eponymous film that oscillates between fiction and documentation. A second Land Art project was initiated in 1971 in Europe on the occasion of the exhibition Sonsbeek 71 near Emmen in Holland. Smithson had also formulated his ideas for a film about this work for which he had already begun filming. Forty years on, the artist and Smithson s widow, Nancy Holt has completed this film in conjunction with SKOR, Amsterdam.
