Martin Postler und Ian Ferguson bilden die multidisziplinäre Londonder Design Agentur Postlerferguson. Sie haben sich mit der Geschichte und der Ästhetik, sowie der morbiden Verführungskraft von Waffen auseinandergesetzt. So lösten sie die berüchtigte AK-47 von ihrer schrecklichen Funktion und zerlegten sie zu einem Bausatz aus Papier. Beim Zusammenbasteln beschäftigt sich der Käufer des Bausatzes unweigerlich mit der Kalaschnikow und ihrer Bedeutung - historisch und persönlich.
Nach der Ausstellung Paper Wars, für die bekannte Street Artists die AK-47 individuell bemalten und auf der auch Luftabwehr-Kanonen aus Papier in Originalgröße gezeigt wurden, präsentieren Postler und Ferguson nun die Fortführung des Kunstprojektes Paper Guns in Form der Maschinenpistolen UZI und MP5, des Maschinengewehrs M4A1 und der "Mills Bomb" Handgranate, die alle als Papier-Sets zum Selberbasteln gestaltet wurden.
Die M4A1 ist eine speziellen Kompaktversion der in den sechziger Jahren entwickelten Colt M16, welche als die Standardwaffe der US Marines in Vietnam zur Berühmtheit kam und zum Symbol des Krieges wurde. Für viele war die M16 mit der prägnanten Silhouette das Symbol des westlichen Imperialismus im Kampf mit dem Kommunismus, welcher durch die AK47 vertreten wurde.
Das M4A1 Design ist ein Teil der Paper Wars-Serie, da ihre Konstruktion neben der ästhetischen Komponente auch eine mediale und zeitgeschichtliche Relevanz hat. Die Entwicklung von der M16 zur M4 und die Bilder, die diese Transformation begleiten, sind exemplarisch für die Veränderungen weltweiter Konflikte und Kriege in den letzten 50 Jahren. Das Bild vom GI in Uniform mit M16 in Vietnam hat sich zum Bild des Private Contractor im Irak im T-Shirt und mit M4 gewandelt.
Hier zeigt sich der gefährliche Drahtseilakt zwischen der Banalisierung der Waffe als Industrieprodukt und Werkzeug und der Faszination bezüglich der Gestalt und Aesthetik des Gewehres.

The M4A8 is part of the Paper Gun Model Kit series by PostlerFerguson, not only for its aesthetic implications, but also for its historical and medial-related relevance. The M4A8 is a special compact version of the Colt M16, developed in the 1960s, which gained notoriety as a standard weapon of the US Marines during the Vietnam War, becoming a symbol of that war. For many, the M16 with its concise silhouette was the symbol of Western Imperialism struggling with Communism, represented by the AK-47. The evolution from the M16 to the M4 shows by way of example the changes of worldwide conflicts and wars in the last 50 years. The image of the GI in uniform in Vietnam has morphed into the "private contractor" in Iraq wearing a T-Shirt and carrying the M4, thus displaying the high wire act between the banality of the weapon as an industrial product and tool. The London-based multidisciplinary design studio PostlerFerguson, composed of Martin Postler and Ian Ferguson investigates the history, the aesthetics and the lethal seductiveness of weapons. In their model kits series, they free the weapons from their terrible capacity to injure and kill by deconstructing it into paper construction sets. Following the AK47 (2007), the death machine series has now been extended with four new paper weapons to the arsenal including the UZI, MP5, M4A8 and Mills Bomb paper grenade. Ultimately these weapons thankfully remain a piece of paper. Not recommended for people under age 18. Recommended for experienced crafters. Construction time depends on handcrafting abilities. Does not contain glue and cutter. If you're gonna play with guns, use paper ones!
