Synopsis
Le point de départ de l'ouvrage est un inventaire détaillé de photographies et d'écrits (réalisé au printemps 2021) de Lee « Scratch » Perry, provenant des Black Ark Studios à Kingston, en Jamaïque, où l'artiste a produit sa musique et posé les bases du dub à partir de 1973. C'est également là que son approche musicale a trouvé une contrepartie visuelle sous la forme de peintures murales et de dessins en constante évolution, ainsi que d'assemblages variables de disques, d'instruments, d'objets trouvés, d'affiches, de coupures de journaux et de magazines, et de livres. Les œuvres visuelles forment de véritables strates rhizomatiquement enchevêtrées avec le bâtiment de l'atelier lui-même ainsi qu'avec le mobilier qui s'y trouve, et avec la biographie et la personnalité de Perry.
Les locaux des studios ont depuis été vendus. La documentation photographique du studio a été complétée par des démarches pour sécuriser et préserver les objets culturels de Perry dans le cadre d'un projet commun avec la Smithsonian Institution à Washington, D.C.
L'ouvrage Black Ark, dont Perry a participé à la conception dès ses premières étapes, reflète le rythme et les effets de superposition du collage, tant dans son contenu que dans les papiers employés, et entrelace différents supports et chronologies. Les nouvelles photographies des Black Ark Studios sont juxtaposées à des images tirées d'anciens documentaires et à des photos d'archives.
L'idée d'une « maison » sert à la fois d'hypothèse de travail et de métaphore. Elle est le point de départ et d'arrivée de différents thèmes, à la fois visuels et textuels : le livre explore notamment le Black Ark en tant que « chantier spirituel » dans le contexte de la diaspora africaine, et se penche sur les aspects archéomusicologiques. En outre, des notes rédigées par le biographe de Perry servent de toile de fond à un panorama kaléidoscopique de l'œuvre éclectique et géniale de Perry.
