They tell of the adventurous trip to Eastern Greenland in 1934 when his team of geologists got stranded on the pack-ice for several weeks. They speak of demanding excursions in the Himalayas - barely investigated in the mid-thirties; of his artistry at disguise when he entered Tibet, at the time still closed to foreigners, disguised as a monk to bring back valuable rock samples from the Kailas, the holiest mountain on planet earth. They speak of excursions to Columbia and Trinidad, and the discovery of giant oil deposits as geologist-in-chief under the Shah of Persia. They tell of the friendship with the Bhutanese King's family and their support in allowing him to be the first to map their country.And this book speaks of all these adventures. Zu einer Zeit, als das Eis noch ewig war und von der sich anbahnenden Klimaerwärmung noch gar nicht die Rede war, nahm der kaum zwanzigjährige Augusto an seiner ersten Expedition teil: der Erkundung der Arktis zusammen mit dem berühmten dänischen Geologen und Forscher Lauge Koch. Zwei Jahre später begleitete Gansser Arnold Heim, seinen Professor, auf eine bedeutende geologische Expedition in den noch kaum bekannten Himalaya. Durch Täler, über Gipfel und Gletscher drangen sie in die entferntesten Winkel im Norden des Bundesstaates Uttaranchal ein, bis in die Nähe des heiligen Berges Kailash in Tibet, zu dem ausländische Forscher damals keinen Zutritt hatten. Er war der erste Geologe, der das Gebiet um den Mount Kailash erforschte. Als Pilger im Dienste der Forschung und absonderlicher Hirte überquerte er die Grenze mit einer Sammlung von heiligen Steinen und geologischen Fundstücken mit einem unschätzbaren wissen- schaftlichen Wert. Als Geologe und Forscher lebte er acht Jahre in Kolumbien, drei Jahre in Trinidad und sieben Jahre im Iran. Nach der Professur für Geologie 1958 setzte er seine Forschungen in Ladakh, Nepal und vor allem in Bhutan fort. 1980 und 1985 wurde Gansser von Deng Xiao Ping für eine geologische Traverse durch Tibet eingeladen. Ursula Markus hat ihren Vater Augusto Gansser auf vielen Reisen begleitet. Als Herausgeberin recherchiert sie das immense Bildmaterial für das Buch, und die bekannte Journalisten Ursula Eichenberger schildert das bewegte Leben von Gansser.
