À propos de l'auteur

Sedigheh Vasmaghi (born 1961 in Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian scholar of Islamic law, poet, and reformist thinker known for her pioneering role as one of the few female experts in Islamic jurisprudence. She studied theology and Islamic law at the University of Tehran and later taught and published extensively on religion and women's rights. In the early 2000s, she served as a member and the first spokesperson of the Tehran City Council, becoming a visible reformist voice within Iran's political establishment. Her writings - such as Women, Jurisprudence, Islam and the poetry collection Praying for Rain - combine scholarly critique with literary expression. Vasmaghi challenges patriarchal interpretations of Islamic law, advocating for gender equality, justice, and reinterpretation of religious texts in light of contemporary human rights principles. Her work bridges theology, literature, and activism, earning her recognition as one of Iran's leading female intellectuals.Due to her outspoken criticism of state policies and her reformist stance, Vasmaghi has faced repeated persecution, including imprisonment and travel restrictions. After spending years in exile in Sweden, she returned to Iran in 2017, where she continued her advocacy despite health problems and government pressure. Her life and work symbolize the struggle for freedom of thought, women's rights, and reform within Islamic tradition.
