Synopsis

Anogia, Crete, the summer of 1941. The German occupation has climbed into the mountain villages, and with it comes Hauptmann Klaus Brehmer - not a soldier by temperament but an archaeologist, sent to inventory the island's antiquities for the Reich.

Beneath his church, Father Emmanouil guards a secret older than any empire: a Minoan rhyton of black obsidian, its base inscribed in a script no one can read. When Brehmer's trained eye turns toward the crypt, priest and officer are drawn into a fragile, dangerous pact - two men who love the same beautiful thing and cannot say so aloud.

As reprisals tighten and his daughter Melina draws closer to the enemy she should fear, the priest must decide what is worth protecting - and what it will cost.

A luminous novel of occupation, beauty, and the things we keep in the dark.

The eighth and final novel of The Secrets of Crete.
