Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Sam Doyle (illustrateur). 1st Edition. 48 unnumbered pages, chiefly illustrations (some color). Text primarily in English with some Japanese. Very good copy. This copy contains a handwritten inscription on the rear free endpaper by contributor and editor Louanne LaRoche. The inscription includes her name alongside the business name, address, and phone number for The Red Piano Gallery (Hilton Head Island, South Carolina), which LaRoche owned and operated between 1980 and 1995. LaRoche was a prominent dealer and early collector of Sam Doyle's work during his lifetime, and she authored the biographical essay appearing in the volume. Provenance Note: Acquired from the estate of John Turner, author, collector, and folk-art curator, who organized exhibitions for the Smithsonian and the Museum of American Folk Art and served as adjunct curator of Twentieth-Century American Folk Art at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. N.B., there are no physical markings or stamps from the Turner collection on or within the book itself. Sam Doyle (1906-1985) was a self-taught Gullah artist from St. Helena Island, South Carolina, known for narrative portraits painted with house paint on salvaged wood and corrugated roofing tin. Nationally introduced in the Corcoran Gallery of Art's 1982 exhibition Black Folk Art in America: 1930-1980, Doyle's work was acquired by contemporary figures including Jean-Michel Basquiat, who displayed Doyle's paintings in his studio and occasionally traded his own work to secure them. Doyle's work has been the subject of ongoing institutional inclusion, with recent exhibitions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2022), the Royal Academy of Arts (2023), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (2024). In March 2026, London's Gallery of Everything presented a dedicated solo installation of Doyle's work at the Outsider Art Fair in New York. The front cover reproduces Doyle's Dr Bus Ha.Lo (Dr. Buz), a work specifically highlighted by Gallery of Everything in its 2026 Outsider Art Fair presentation. Signed by Author(s).
