Synopsis

No Time for Sergeants is one of the most successful books of all time. First published in 1954, it has been made into a Broadway Play, several Theatrical Productions, a movie and a long running television series, with several spin-offs. It started several now famous actors on their careers and established their personas for other movies and other TV shows. The story starts when the man from the draft board arrives in his car to take hillbilly Will Stockdale to Callville for induction into the army. Pa chases him off. But even hastily erected barbed wire couldn't prevent Uncle Sam from claiming a draftee and soon Will was off by bus to Ft. Thompson, Georgia. And there began as wildly improbable series of humorous episodes as anyone is likely to recall. In the barracks Will meets little Ben Whitledge. Together they managed to get assigned to the Air Force, even though Will couldn't understand “Yankee Talk” at first. His long hours at KP and as latrine orderly hardly prepared him for his interview with the psychiatrist or the gunners school or mock warfare. This was the beginning of several hilarious and improbable adventures.

Biographie de l'auteur

The author, MAC HYMAN was born in Cordele, Georgia on August 25, 1923. He spent most of his life there until he went away to school. He attended North Carolina College, a military school, and then Duke University and Auburn. He was drafted in 1943, passed the Air Corps examination and finally ended as a navigator. He went overseas with one of the first B-29 outfits as a lieutenant in photo-navigation, first to Saipan and then Guam. Before the war was over he had flown 23 combat missions over Japan. His flight crew was over Hiroshima the morning after the first atomic bomb was dropped and they took the pictures that appeared in newspapers all over the world. After World War II he returned to Duke and began to write. He got married to his childhood sweetheart. Next he was living in New York City, working for a time as a shipping clerk in a book store, and then in St. Augustine Florida where both he and his wife tried teaching school. He was broke when his first child was born so he re-enlisted in the Air Force and ended up in Houston Texas. It was then that he began writing No Time for Sergeants. He continued working on it until after he got out of the Air Force and while attending Columbia University under the G.I. Bill, and then finished it in Georgia on his father's farm. Mac Hyman died on July 17, 1963 at age 39. His second book, Take Now Thy Son, was published posthumously.
