Synopsis

This book by a high school math teacher teaches everything one will ever need to know about arithmetic. Starting with simple numbers and counting, it goes through addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and then proceeds to fractions, square roots, plane geometry, solid geometry, charts, graphs, calculations of the volume of a cylinder, interest on a loan and other problems requiring the use of arithmetic. In just this one volume, this amazing book covers everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, from the seventh grade level math to the College Freshman level and perhaps even beyond. Originally published in 1943, this book has been used as a basic textbook for thousands, possibly millions, of high school math books.

Biographie de l'auteur

Edwin I. Stein, a Philadelphia educator and author whose math methods have helped unstump generations of arithmetic students around the world, was born on 30 November 1909. An honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania at age 19, Mr. Stein did graduate work at the Wharton School and Drexel Institute. His first job - and his first creative application of numbers - was as a traffic engineer for the City of Philadelphia. His study of traffic in Philadelphia during the 1930s produced his first book: Safety Approach Speed. A short time later, he began a 25-year teaching career with the Philadelphia School District, teaching math at Roosevelt Junior High School and Leeds Junior High School. He devised concepts for teaching grade-school arithmetic that not only taught students to come up with the correct answers, but showed them, through a series of exercises, how and why the answers were correct. He understood that just because a student came up with what sounded like the right answer, it did not mean that the student knew the right answer. Mr. Stein published his first math book - Refresher Arithmetic - in 1943. Other books, including Algebra in Easy Steps and Fundamentals of Mathematics, followed. Millions of copies of Mr. Stein's books were published and have been used all over the world as aids in the teaching of math. Mr. Stein used some of the proceeds of his works to establish a trust fund with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He died on October 2, 1990 at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey. He was 80.
